The concept of this painting came together for me while in Cheyenne, Wyoming, at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. The Frontier Days Rodeo, which is called “the daddy of them all,” has been in existence since 1897.
When I saw Elizabeth and William, the children of artist Wayne Baize and his wife, Ellen, I knew I wanted to paint them. As we were talking, rodeo clown/bullfighter Bob Romer, whose nickname is “Bulldancer,” came over, and the combination was irresistible to me.
I wanted to show the tenderness, compassion and good- heartedness of this tough, courageous and rugged bullfighter. He knows very well that this is a big moment for the little boy. He takes his hand to show him everything is OK. – Jim Daly
